WEARING DENTAL BRACES

WEARING DENTAL BRACES

Dental braces (also known as orthodontic braces, or simply braces) are devices used in orthodontics that align and straighten teeth and help to position them with regard to a person's bite, while also working to improve dental health. They are often used to correct underbites, as well asmalocclusions, overbites, cross bites, open bites, deep bites, crooked teeth, and various other flaws of the teeth and jaw. Braces can be either cosmetic or structural. Dental braces or orthodontic braces are often used in conjunction with other orthodontic appliances to help widen the palate or jaws and to otherwise assist in shaping the teeth and jaws.

There are three types of braces which are brackets, traditional bands and lingual-type brackets. Brackets are made from stainless steel, plastic or ceramic. They are placed on the front of each tooth with a specialized bonding agent. Traditional bands wrap around each tooth and consist of metal brackets and metal bands. Lingual-type brackets attach to the back of your teeth so the brackets are hidden from view. The brackets that attach to each tooth hold the wires that move your teeth. They can be bonded to each tooth directly or cemented to your teeth by bands. Orthodontic bands wrap around each tooth and anchor the brackets. They can be clear, tooth-colored or stainless steel. Arch wires attach to the brackets and guide the movement of your teeth. Small rubber rings or wires called ties are used to fasten the arch wire to the brackets. A buccal tube is placed on the bands of the last molar teeth to hold the arch wire in place. Ligatures, or rubber bands, are used to hold the arch wires to the brackets. The ligatures apply pressure to the upper and lower teeth to move them into place.

Of so many fashion trends, braces trend is one of the most phenomenal ones. Braces look traditionally gives bad impression. But for this era, braces look awesome since the design give pretty look. In addition, people will look shiny and more attractive as they can smile and show colorful braces. Braces are now admired by people with all ages. Some regard that braces make people look cute. However, people should be very careful. They should never include braces as fashion style. Braces are medical tools that are used for treating teeth. Therefore, people should not play with braces. When people decide to wear braces, they have to choose high quality braces that are made of fine material that give no side effects for health.

People can now find braces as accessories that are sold in incredibly cheap price. Those kinds of braces are dangerous for their health. People should never purchase such type of braces. It will be better to use braces that are designed by professional orthodontist such as orthodontics Glasgow. Braces under the supervision of the specialist will give no side effects. Implants glasgow online service will help people to treat their teeth better. They can visit the site for checking the service quality.

Since the change is gradual, people who have been advised to wear braces normally keep it on for a relatively long period of time. Basically, kids or adults who have malocclusion (a bad bite) are the primary candidates to wear braces. A bad bite needs to be corrected because it has greater possibility of causing jaw problems in the future. Also, a bad bite affects a person by being unable to speak or chew properly.

There are several possible reasons why a bad bite occur, one of which an abnormal number of teeth. Having extra teeth or lacking some teeth can affect a person’s bite. Malocclusion can also be saused by having a small mouth (little space means crowding of the teeth) or a misaligned jaw or bone structure. In some cases, children who are fond of tongue thrusting (extending the tongue forward and pressing it adjacent to the lips) commonly end up having protruded teeth. This protrusion of the teeth can also possibly cause malocclusion.

The benefits of wearing braces are the results of having worn a brace are immediately visible in the improvement of a person’s smile. There is a significant difference in the before and after smile of a person who has worn a brace. Also, help prevent the occurrence of tooth decay because by properly aligning the teeth, hard to clean areas will become easier to clean once the teeth have been aligned properly. Since the basic purpose of wearing a brace is to correct a bad bite, once the brace has been removed, the bad bite will have been corrected as well. This will result in decreased damage to the teeth. Also, having a better bite will improve a person’s chewing and speaking. The disadvantage of wearing braces is those who wear braces sometimes complain of pain caused by the realignment of the teeth and the devices rubbing on the inside of the mouth.

Everyone has a slightly different bite, so treatment techniques vary. Braces are the most common approach. They help to move the teeth slowly by applying precise amounts of light pressure over a long period of time. Most orthodontic treatments occur in two phases. First, the active phase which that braces or other appliances are used to move the teeth into proper alignment and correct the bite. Secondly, the retention phase. A retainer is used to hold the teeth in their new positions for the long term.In addition to braces, orthodontists sometimes use special appliances (called functional appliances) to direct the growth of the jaw in young children. These appliances are rarely used in adults. That's because they are not effective after growth is complete.

There may be a lot of reasons why the dentists recommend the use of braces. Some of the common reasons are to straighten teeth. Dentists recommend braces for people who have misaligned or crocked teeth. This is due to the fact that it can cause problems in chewing the food. It addition to this misaligned teeth can also cause back problems and at times severe headaches. Second, bite issues. When upper jaw line extends the lower line then teeth also grow in the similar direction. There is also another situation where the lower jaw teeth jut the upper jaw teeth. In both the situations there is a chance of damage to jaws as it releases tension in to the jaw-line. In some cases it can also damage ones bones. Most of the times people do not need braces but they get them just to get the perfect smile.People with digestion problems also get braces as they face problems in chewing food. The dentists recommend braces to avoid breathing problems that may come with age. As we grow older the structure of the roof of your mouth changes. However, if one has straight teeth most of food digestion and breathing problems can be kept away. So, it can be said that braces do good and are necessary to keep you healthy and to provide you a perfect smile.

Complications and risks are changes in the shape of the face, jaw and cheekbones may occur as a result of braces. It is important for a patient to discuss the potential changes with an orthodontist, as these changes may not be positive.Plaque forms easily when food is retained in and around braces. It is important to maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing and flossing thoroughly when wearing braces to prevent tooth decay, decalcification, or unpleasant color changes to the teeth. There is a small chance of allergic reaction to the elastics or to the metal used in braces. In even rarer cases, latex allergy may result in anaphylaxis. Latex-free elastics and alternative metals can be used instead. It is important for those who believe that they are allergic to their braces to notify the orthodontist immediately.

Mouth sores may be triggered by irritation from components of the braces. Many products can increase comfort, including oral rinses, dental wax or dental silicone, and products to help heal sores.Braces can also be damaged if proper care is not taken. It is important to wear a mouth guard to prevent breakage and/or mouth injury when playing sports. Certain sticky or hard foods such as taffy, raw carrots, hard pretzels, and toffeeshould be avoided because they can damage braces. Frequent damage to braces can prolong treatment. Some orthodontists recommend sugar-free chewing gumin the belief that it may expedite treatment and relieve soreness; other orthodontists object to gum chewing because it is sticky and may therefore damage the braces.

In the course of treatment orthodontic brackets may pop off due to the forces involved, or due to cement weakening over time. The orthodontist should be contacted immediately for advice if this occurs. In most cases the bracket is replaced. When teeth move, the end of the arch wiremay become displaced, causing it to poke the back of the patient's cheek. Dental wax can be applied to cushion the protruding wire. The orthodontist must be called immediately to have it clipped, or a painful mouth ulcer may form. If the wire is causing severe pain, it may be necessary to carefully bend the edge of the wire in with a spoonor other piece of equipment (e.g. tweezers, clean eraser side of a pencil) until the wire can be clipped by an orthodontist.
Patients with periodontal disease usually must obtain periodontal treatment before getting braces. A deep cleaning is performed, and further treatment may be required before beginning orthodontic treatment. Bone loss due to periodontal disease may lead to tooth loss during treatment. In some cases, teeth may be loose for a prolonged period of time. One may be able to wiggle one's teeth for a year or two after treatment or longer.

The dental displacement obtained with the orthodontic appliance determines in most cases some degree of root resorption. Only in a few cases is this side effect large enough to be considered real clinical damage to the tooth. In rare cases, the teeth may fall out or have to be extracted due to root resorption.Pain and discomfort are common after adjustment and may cause difficulty eating for a time, often a couple days. During this period, eating soft foods can help avoid additional pressure on teeth.Removal of the cemented brackets can also be painful. The cement must be chipped and scraped off which can cause severe pain in patients with sensitive teeth. Often molar bands have been installed for an extended period of time and they may be embedded in the gums at the time of removal.

The metallic look may not be desirable to some people, although transparent varieties are available. According to a survey published in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, dental braces with no visible metal were considered the most attractive. Ceramic braces with thin metal or clear wires were a less desirable option, and braces with metal brackets and metal wires were rated as the least aesthetic combination.

It is permissible to use braces on the teeth and this does not affect the validity ofablution or Ghusl (ritual bath), even if they prevent the water reaching the teeth because rinsing one's mouth and nose is a Sunnah in ablution and Ghusl according to the majority of scholars. It is not an obligation to wash what is under the braces because of the hardship and difficulty of doing so, whether that is in ablution or in Ghusl. It is enough to rinse the braces of the teethas Allah says (which means):{And has not laid upon you in religion any hardship.}  Allah further says (which means): {Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope.}

Allah has cursed those women who practise tattooing and those who get themselves tattooed, and those who remove their face hairs, and those who create a space between their teeth artificially to look beautiful, and such women as change the features created by Allah. Why then should I not curse those whom the Prophet has cursed? And that is in Allah's Book. i.e. His Saying: 'And what the Apostle gives you take it and what he forbids you abstain (from it).' (59.7)
So what we know is if it is for the purpose of beauty, which is the main reason why people do it, then this is not good. But when it is for good hygene, it is a good thing.

ShaykhSaalih al-Fawzaan was asked about straightening the teeth and he said, If that is necessary, such as if there is some deformity in the teeth that needs to be corrected, then there is nothing wrong with it. But if it is not necessary then it is not permitted, rather it is forbidden to file the teeth or make gaps between them for the purpose of beautification, and there is a strong warning against doing so because it is a kind of messing about and altering the creation of Allah.
But if this is done for the purpose of medical treatment, or to remove a deformity or for some other need, such as when a person is unable to eat unless his teeth are corrected, then there is nothing wrong with that.

With regard to removing extra teeth, ShaykhIbnJibreen said: there is nothing wrong with removing an extra tooth, because it deforms the appearance and makes things difficult for a person but it is not permissible to file them or make gaps between them because of the prohibition on doing so.

ShaykhIbn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) said beautification is of two types which mean beautification that is aimed at removing a fault due to an accident etc – there is nothing wrong with this, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) told a man whose nose had been cut off in battle to get a nose made of gold. The second type is aimed at increasing beauty, which is not aimed at removing a fault, rather the aim is to make someone more beautiful. This is haram and is not permissible because the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) cursed the woman who plucks eyebrows, the one who has that done, the woman who does tattoos and the woman who has that done, the woman who adds hair extensions and the woman who has that done, because this is aimed at increasing beauty and is not removing a fault.

A large gap between the teeth is an abnormality which some people are affected by. It is permissible for one who has such a fault in his teeth, or other faults, to correct it, and there is no sin on him for doing that. Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in Shah Muslim (13/107):With regard to the phrase “women who file teeth”, what is meant is doing that for the purpose of beautification. This indicates that that which is haram is that which is done for the purpose of beautification. But if there is a need for that for medical reasons or to correct a fault in the teeth etc, there is nothing wrong with that.

The Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas (24/75) was asked: If I have two teeth that are long, is it permissible for me to make them level with the other teeth? They replied If they are so long that they bother you, they you may remove that which is bothering you only.

There is no harm in dental braces if the objective is to bring the teeth to their original position after an accident or deformation. The Prophet SAW said: "O slaves of Allah, seek treatment." [Ahmad, At-Tirmithi and IbnMaajah] There is no harm as well in artificial teeth implantation or fitting a partial plate for necessity, like the case of a person whose teeth –or some of it- had fallen off and needs repairing or replacement in order to chew food or speak properly and the like. But if one intends by doing so to cheat or deceive the person who looks at him/her, if it is for the purpose of marriage and the like, then this is forbidden.

Getting mouth braces for all teeth while fasting does not invalidate the fast (sawm) so long as do not deliberately swallow any materials. If it is possible to do that at night, that will be better and more on the safe side with regard to the fast. ShaykhIbnBaaz (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked (15/285) If a person has a toothache and he goes to the dentist, and he does some cleaning or a filling or pulls out one of his teeth, or wearing braces does that affect his fast, or if the dentist gives him an injection to numb his tooth, does that affect his fast? He replied that the things mentioned in the question do not affect the validity of the fast, rather that is excused. But he has to be careful to avoid swallowing any of the medicine or blood. Similarly, the injection mentioned does not invalidate the fast either, because it is not like food and drink, and the basic principle is that the fast remains valid.

You do not have to take out your braces in order to fast, because nothing goes from it to the stomach. The fact that it causes you to produce more saliva does not mean that it breaks the fast. The scholars stated that it is permissible for a person who is fasting to put a dirham (a coin) in his mouth whilst fasting, and it is more appropriate that it be permissible to put braces in one's mouth than a coin, because people do not put braces in their mouth unless they need to.

Imam Ahmad (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Whoever puts a dirham or a dinar in his mouth whilst he is fasting, so long as the taste of it does not reach his throat, there is nothing wrong with that, but if he notices a taste, then I do not approve of that. Al-Mughni, 4/359. And if he swallows the saliva, even if it is a lot, that does not affect his fast. And Allaah knows best.Inbrief, I can conclude that when the purpose of wearing braces is to increase beauty. This is haram and is not permissible. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) cursed the women who filed teeth for the purpose of beauty and altered the creation of Allah, even though women are required to look beautiful and they are the ones who grow up with adornments, so it is even more forbidden in the case of men.

However, if they are straightened because of a fault; there is nothing wrong with that. Some people may have teeth that stick out – either the incisors or other teeth – in a way that makes them appear ugly to others. In this case there is nothing wrong with straightening the teeth, because this is removing a fault and not increasing beauty. This is indicated by the fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) told a man whose nose had been cut off to get a nose made of silver, then when that caused a foul smell he told him to get a nose made of gold. This was a case of removing a fault; the aim was not to increase beauty. End quote from Majmoo’ Fataawa al-ShaykhIbn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him),
The verse does not mean that it is forbidden to have the teeth treated and straightened in order to remove a deformity or fault.

  14. Next question: Braces vs Invisalign.
For cases of overcrowding and crooked teeth causing incomplete bite, should one choose braces where teeth removal is required or should one choose invisalign where filing is required?

I am looking in the perspective that teeth are blessed in their numbers for their function.
Each teeth grow in their position to fit that particular role in the mouth. As one grows the facial profile creates some space and these number of teeth is there to fill up that void. Thus they should be left alone. I am also looking in the perspective that filing to create space can save healthy teeth from being extracted unnecessarily.
I am wondering would I be wrong to choose invisalign above braces?

  15. Apologies i overlook that filing could also be implemented for braces.

So my exact question is, in such scenario, would one be wrong to choose filing over extraction?
