ISLAM AND CHARACTER BUILDING

Islam and Character Building

Islam has laid down some universal fundamental rights for humanity as a whole, which are to be observed and respected under all circumstances. To achieve these rights, Islam provides not only legal safeguards, but also a very effective moral system. Thus, whatever leads to the welfare of the individual or the society is morally good in Islam and whatever is injurious is morally bad. Islam attaches so much importance to the love of God and love of man that it warns against too much formalism. We can refer this in the Quran.[1]

We are given a beautiful description of the righteous and God-conscious man in these verses. He should obey salutary regulations, and should seek the love of God and the love of his fellow-men. We are given four directions. Firstly, our faith should be true and sincere. Next, we must be prepared to show it in deeds of charity to our fellow-men. Next, we must be good citizens and supporting social organizations. Lastly, our own individual soul must be firm and unshaken in all circumstances.[2]

Below are ways how to instil good profound manner.

The first way is self exercise or self struggle. One should train themselves to do good deeds so that they become familiar with certain good quality until it becomes a habit. Examples of the good deeds are acts of kindness, visit the sick, and others. By practicing these good deeds, it will become a common thing that we do every day. Acts of kindness protect one from ruin wrought by evil. Allah is Kind and He loves kindness. Kindness is not to be found in anything but that it adds to its beauty. The Prophet Muhammad said that heaven calls out to anyone who visits a sick person. If you are good and your path is good, you may enter your residence in Paradise.[3]

The next way is by observing good people and associating ourselves with them. We can become a better person by following them. Also, we can ask friend who is truthful and pious about our own weakness and shortcomings. These friends can help us by correcting our mistakes, thus, making us realise our wrong doings and weaknesses. As a result, we will try to improve ourselves in becoming a better person. [4]

Living in a conductive and good environment is also another way to instil good profound manner. Community can influence one’s character. A good community will encourage man to acquire a good character. But if the community is bad, then the man will become bad because he is influenced by his surroundings. We can say that the surroundings can influence one’s character and behaviour. 4

Lastly we should follow a role model (Qudwah Hasanah). In Islam, the personality of Prophet Muhammad becomes the most excellent role model to be followed by all Muslims.4 This is because Prophet Muhammad has the best Akhlak for a human being could have. For example, Rasulullah (SAW) went to the mosque carrying his great granddaughter. She was a child and he was carrying her on his shoulder. The Prophet (SAW) led the people in prayer while she was on his shoulder. When he bowed in prayer, he put her down and picked her up when he got up. He kept on doing this until he finished his prayer.[5]

The purpose behind the action of Rasulullah (SAW) carrying his great granddaughter in the prayer was to set an example for those who considered having daughters and carrying them around as something bad or shameful. Rasulullah (SAW) acted differently from them and carried a girl on his neck in the prayer. Making something clear by example is much more effective than a mere precept.

The Prophet Muhammad teaches people in how to become a person with good Akhlak. There was once when a man asks the Prophet to teach some words that he can live by and not too much unless he will forget. The Prophet said do no become angry. This is a very good lesson that we can learn from and practice it in our living. Other than that, the Prophet also gives motivational word that can inspire people. The Prophet said, if a man suffers injustice and endures it patiently, Allah will grant him strength. Also he said, there are two kinds of people worth envying: They are someone whom Allah has made rich and who spends his money righteously, and someone whom Allah has given wisdom and who acts according to it and teaches it to others.

Thus, on the basic moral characteristics, Islam builds a higher system of morality by virtue of which mankind can realize its greatest potential. Islam purifies the soul from self-seeking egotism, tyranny and indiscipline. It creates God-conscious men, devoted to their ideals, possessed of piety, discipline and uncompromising with falsehood. It induces feelings of moral responsibility and fosters the capacity for self-control. Islam generates kindness, generosity, mercy, sympathy, peace, disinterested goodwill, scrupulous fairness and truthfulness towards all creation in all situations. It nourishes noble qualities from which only good may be expected.
