CHEF

A society needs different people holding different profession so that they can contribute their various skills to the development of their society. But if you look at Muslims they tend to obtain popular and traditional business that give an immediate reward. then, our society could not be developed as a progressive nation and can be left behind anyway. thus, we should try to train our youths of various professions and skills without further delay, so let's have a look at various types of profession including chef.

According to Oxford dictionary, chef can be defined as a professional cook, typically the chief cook in a restaurant or hotel. Usually, chef responsible for planning menus, ordering foodstuffs, overseeing food preparation and supervising the kitchen staff. In addition, a chef is an individual who oversees the culinary staff and wears quite a few different hats with regard to what goes on in their workplace. A chef also describes as a person who cooks professionally for other people. Traditionally it refers to a highly skilled professional cook who is proficient in all aspects of food preparation. Examples of chef are pastry chef, pantry chef, vegetables chef, fry chef, fish chef, roast chef, grill chef, head chef, executive chef, chef supervisor, chef  leader and chef manager. Different chefs have different tasks. For examples, the executive chef is in charge of everything related to the kitchen, including menu creation, staff management and business aspects. While the position requires extensive cooking experience and often involves actively cooking, the staff of benefit, it also involves a high level of management and business aspects of the kitchen. They can also be referred to as the "chef" or "head chef". Although "head chef" may seem redundant, the word "chef" has come to be applied to any cook, kitchen helper or fast food operator, making the distinction necessary. Second, the sous chef is the executive chef’s assistant. He or she is second in charge and fills in when the executive chef is off duty. The sous chef is responsible for making sure the line chefs fulfill the executive chef’s orders. A sous chef is usually on his or her way to becoming a head chef, and thus, would likely benefit from a formal culinary education, as well as work experience in the form of internships or apprenticeships under an executive chef. Next, the line chefs (or station chef) work under the watchful eyes of the sous chef. Each line chef is in charge of a specific part of the meal. In most kitchens, the line chef is the only cook working on that part of the meal, but in very large operations, the line chef may have assistants and lower chefs under his or her supervision.[1]

I choose to become a chef because this is the key of future. I passionate about cooking and love to spend time to trying recipes and inventing new ones. I am very interested in cooking, therefore I take this hobby more seriously and transform it into career. The best thing about chef job is that, I do not need to have professional training to turn into a chef. All I need to have are interest, great sense of taste, knowledge of basic cooking, some good recipes and a will to work hard because I will learn the rest in the process with due practice. Furthermore, I was chosen to become a chef because I can add taste to food and get compliments whatever I make. I must to be creative to make various kinds of dishes from whatever I have in hand and always be experimental with flavors and textures. I don't consider myself a great cook, but I think I do a better than average job in the kitchen and with the proper training I probably would be a great cook. I feel happy when I'm cooking, about as much as I do when I'm writing. And that is an excellent reason to make something in my career. Working in the culinary arts isn't an easy job and the hours, weekends and evenings, are less than desirable for many people. [2]That's why it's astonishing there is such a high level of job satisfaction in this field according to what I've read about it.

There are a lot of benefits that we can get from become a chef. Firstly, even though recession might hit big industries and even the most talented people might lose jobs, economics may fall and people might stop to spend on luxury goods, but chef job never lose their importance because even in the worst time, people never stop spending on good food. Moreover, there is always work for chefs and hence, no matter what your experience or skills or area of expertise, you would definitely find work in any corner of the world. In such a big country, there are a lot of restaurants and hotels provide job vacancy for chefs. Next, competitive salary. Salary ranges differ widely for chefs. Average salary from $32000 to $86000 per year depending on ranks. Some who work as executive chef for 5 stars hotels and first class restaurants can earn an annual income that approaches or exceeds the 6 digits. A few handfuls turn into millionaires by becoming celebrities and operating several restaurants bearing their names. While others start to become a writer, write cookbooks and judge cooking events. Furthermore, as a chef, you will expert in nutritional information. A well-educated chef knows what they are working with. One of the benefits of becoming a chef includes knowing the details of the nutrients in food they are eating. The nutrients in the food are very essential for the growth of our body. Then, we will have joy. A chef is an artist of sorts. They tend to take pride in their work and enjoy what they do. Next, you will get fame. While some people go to restaurant simply based on the name or clientele of the restaurant, there are those customers who go because they know they can rely on the chef for a well develop meal to please their palate. Moreover, get respect even the owner of the restaurant doesn’t not get as much respect as the chef. The chef is the artist of the facility. Often, the owners are simply considered to be the backers of the chef. Last but not least, you will feel of satisfaction when someone or customers are pleased with your food.[3]

However, there are still have drawbacks and weakness if we want to be a chef. Firstly, we will be working in a hot, fast-paced kitchen ,menus often do not change that much and being a line cook is like working on factory assembly line, produce as much food as possible, in a set time limit. Besides, we also will be working at night because chef also have shift, on holidays and weekends. We have to sacrifice our time on weekends with our beloved family if we want to be a chef and this is not we want to. We will never be home for dinner with our own family. Because most chefs don’t have a great deal of money and the hours are very long and the work is very physical demanding. Often, chefs are blamed for dissatisfying customers even when they have prepared good food. Chef typically work 50-80 hours per week, will be working on your feet all day long. It difficult to find time to take breaks and it will cause me to become stressful and more pressure because physical demand is too high. Moreover, we must to be strong enough to handle food preparation equipment and large quantities of ingredients so that we do not make mistakes and risk the hazards of a kitchen such as burns, cuts and slips. [4]Lastly, become a chef is highly competitive because we have to put long hours and possibly years of my life before we can run my own kitchen. It is difficult to run own kitchen if we do not have fully knowledge in our profession because risk to failure in our own business is too high. Competition for chef positions in prestigious restaurants and other high paid situation is strong. Chefs must compete with their peers both in culinary skills but also in the abilities to market new foods and attract customers.

To become a good chef, I must adapt Islamic concept in my career to promote Islamic teaching around the world. Therefore, there are a few steps that I will follow to be a good chef, which are cleanliness, sincerity, high commitment and be a good role model. Firstly, I have to be a diligent cleaner. We know, it is the worst part of cooking, but cleaning throughout the process, rather than all at the end makes it a much easier job. As we know, cleanliness is part of faith, so we must practice it because Allah loves who are take care their cleanliness. Second, sincerity is act truly about my feeling, thought and desires while I am cooking to ensure Allah gives reward to me. Sincerity is the quality of being open and truthful, not deceitful or hypocritical. Third, high commitment to my own job. Commitment is the trait of being serious, the act of binding yourself intellectually or emotionally to a course of action. I will give fully commitment in my job to reduce mistakes and make sure my food meet customers satisfaction and happiness. Fourth, become a good role model to others chef. To become a good role model, I must have best quality which is be responsible to ensure every meal served meet the restaurants or hotels standards. Next, good work habits which is able to keep up the pace, keep kitchen clean and organized. Lastly, good management by minimize personal conflicts in the kitchen so that we as chefs can cooperate together to maximize customers satisfaction towards our food.[5]

Some views from Islamic scholar about chef and food is there is no such thing as Islamic cuisine. There is only Muslim cuisine, the idea of an Islamic dish is not something you can prove in our texts. The origin of Muslim’s dietary ladivicommandments. For the Muslims a whole code of life is completed as a religion “Islam”. In Islam a strong emphasis is placed on cleanliness both spiritually and especially on dietary laws. For a food or drink to be approved for consumption as Halal it must be confirmed by Islamic law (Shari’ah) revealed in Quran and in tradition of last Prophet.Rather, cooking Islamicly means to cook with lawful and wholesome ingredients (halal tayyiban) along with the proper etiquettes of how to eat, the amount to eat, its proportions and many more. Halal is an Arabic word which means permitted, allowed, lawful, approved and legal. This Quranic term used to describe the permitted things as “Halal”. Opposite of Halal is Haram means forbidden or prohibited. There is a clear boundary between Halal and Haram. While the things with no clear status is termed as “Mashbooh” (doubtful), either due to the differences in scholars’ opinions or the presence of undetermined ingredients in a food product. Najis is something not clean, Halal thing may become Najis when contaminated and Makrooh is a term generally associated with someone’s dislike for a food product or, while not clearly haram, is considered dislikeable by some Muslims. The basic principles are revealed by Almighty and explained by tradition of Prophet (Hadith). Other sources of Jurisprudence used to determine the permissibility of food not explained in Quran and Hadith are Ijtihad to solve the problem either by Ijma, consensus of opinion or Qiyas, analogical reasoning or by combination of both. [6]Dietary laws given to Muslims in scripture are also described in Christianity and in religion of other book holders (Ahlul-Kitab).

According to views of Western scholars, cooking is not only a response to the basic  human need of feeding ourselves and is also more than the search for happiness. Cooking is powerful, transformative tool that through the joint effort of co-producers, whether chefs, producers or eaters can change the way the world nourishes itself. We dream of a future in which the chef is socially engaged, conscious of and responsible for his or her contribute to the culture and society. Through cooking, ethics and aesthetics, we can also serve as an important bridge to other cultures. The chefs fended off critism that they should remain in their kitchens and devote themselves exclusively to cooking.[7]

On the other hand, the significance of food preparation also contain in Al-Quran Surah Al-khaf ayah 103-105 and hadith Bukhari. In surah Al-Khaf, they do not directly at least, but they are a lesson derived from that. When we cook food, we should strive to do it for the sake of Allah SWT alone, with ihsan so as to help quench the hunger of His slaves and thereby being useful to the creation (as Allah love those who are useful and beneficial to others). There should be no action inside or out to make the favor of our cooking felt upon those eating it nor any secret desire for comments as a means to appease our nafs. People may or may not say good things about your cooked food, but at the end of the day, it is fate that is gets over and vanishes (by being eaten and such). By purifying the niyah for Allah alone, an action that is temporary and has temporary result can be channeled into a reward that can be made eternal near our Rabb. Meanwhile, in Hadith, Al-Miqdam narrated that the Prophet SAW said, “Nobody has ever eaten a better meal than that which one has earned by working with one’s own hands, and the Prophet of Allah, Dawod peace be upon him used to cat from his own hands”, by Bukhari volume 3, book 34, number 286.

It goes on to mention a beautiful perspective on food preparation, describing food prepared by one’s hands having a ‘spiritual dimension’  of passing on barakah and a phychological healing process that makes a person feel wholesome. Moreover, there are lots of ayah stated in the Quran about food. For instance, “O mankind! Eat of that which is lawful and wholesome on earth.....” (Quran 2:168), “He hath forbidden you only carrion, and blood, and swine flesh, and that which hath been immolated to (the name of) any other than Allah…” (Quran 2:173), “Eat of that over which the name of Allah hath been mentioned, if ye are believers in His revelations” (Quran 6: 118), “O ye who believe! Eat of the good things wherewith We have provided you and render thanks to Allah if it is He whom you worship” (Quran 2: 172). “And eat not of that whereon Allah’s name hath not been mentioned, for lo! It is abomination. Lo! The devils do inspire their minions to dispute with you. But if ye obey them, ye will be in truth idolaters” (Quran 6: 121). Furthermore, the Quran and Sunnah also stated about food such as cucumber, yogurt, butter, pumpkin, rabbit, honey and dates. Prophet Muhammad was seen eating cucumber with fresh dates by Hadith Muslim #5072. Next, Abdul Rahman was reported to have bought yogurt and butter in the marketplace by Hadith Bukhari 3:264. Then, pumpkin is permissible and enjoyed by the prophet by Hadith Muslim #5068. Moreover, rabbit was eaten by the prophet by Hadith Bukhari 3:746 and Hadith Muslim. Besides, the ajwah dates come from paradise and they are a remedy for poison narrated Abu Hurairah,Transmitted Tirmidhiya tradition.[8]

Furthermore, there are lots of contributions of a chef in society. First, bring joy and satisfaction to people’s live with the good taste and healthy food. The food that has good taste will effect mood of customers. For example, customers will feel happy if the food that we serve boost their appetite as well can full their stomach. This is the symbol of maximum satisfaction to our customers because they invest their money for the best food. As a chef, we should ensure that a customer would completely enjoy the culinary experience as this is a feast not only for the stomach but for the eyes as well. Because, customers like the dishes which have arranged in attractive manner however simple ingredients are. They love to see the arrangement of food that give them happiness. Next, to feed hungry people who do not have time to cook at their home because there have a plenty of work and busy. Usually, businessman and businesswoman are very busy at their office and do not have much time to spend their time for cooking. Therefore, they take short way by eating at restaurant, café or hotel that they can get as soon as possible. Besides, to teach others how to cook correctly especially woman because woman must know how to cook for their husband and family from simple to complex food. We will make the cooking class to show and teach people how to cook with the correct ingredients and culinary. People will feel interesting and eager to learn to cook if the chefs are master and professional.[9]

Overall, in my own perspective, pursuing a career as a chef can be both challenging and rewarding all at once. An individual not only gets to do what he or she loves, which is work with delicacies and food, but he or she also are able to take on a supervisory role. One who is a chef will be run much more smoothly if he or she possess certain positive traits such as good communication skills, creativity and professionalism. Furthermore, as a chef we should not cook to be wasteful in our food, but rather make a meal that will fill you for two days and on the third day, eat something to keep you active, but not to overfill yourself. Cook is to learn survival and discipline and not to fatten yours. The goals as a chef are to provide traditional recipes and cultural education, provide culinary education derived from teachings of the Al-Quran and Sunnah and provide education on the diet of the Prophet and food etiquettes in Islam. Moreover, we should achieve our goals to maximize our own satisfaction. My own goal is to get culinary education. Education is the key to accomplish any goal smartly. Having some education in cookery will add multiple benefits for a cook. It gets easier for me to join any café, restaurant or hotel provided the relevant educational degree or certificate with me. It helps me to polish my skills and talent. Then, stay up to date. Staying up to date is very important for a chef. It helps me to know what’s liked by people in terms of taste. It also helps a chef to know what kind of food is appreciated by the taste buds of people. This is definitely an amazing way to accomplish one’s goal of becoming a famous chef. Besides, take feedback positively. At the end of the day, a chef as me wants to know whether my style of cook and dishes are liked by people or not. For this a chef must always ask for feedback. Don’t take feedback negatively; after all, a feedback helps me to improve my way of cooking. This also tells what should be practiced for future. Next, eat out as much as possible. Without tasting the food that is famous and liked by people, a chef can never understand what his customers want. There are many chefs who every week take out time from their schedule and try different kind of food, cooked by other chefs. This makes them learn and know more about different food items and cuisines.[10]
