EVENT MANAGER
What is event manager? Event manager is
the co-ordinator, runner and planner of all the people, teams and features that
come together to create every kind of event.1[1]
Have you ever wondered how an Olympic Games Opening Ceremony comes to life? Did
you join the millions of people across the world who watched as Kate Middleton
said 'I do'? Or have you ever stood at, watched and loved a fireworks display?
Behind all of
these and more, event management professionals work tirelessly to create the
best experience possible for the guests, the stars, the sponsors &
stakeholders, and the spectators.
Besides, event
management is also means an additional feature used to define a process that
helps leverage automation to manage events to become more effective and
efficient.2[2] Event is defines as "any detectable or
discernable occurrence that has significance for the management of the IT
infrastructure or the delivery of IT service and evaluation of the impact a
deviation might cause to the services.”
Why this topic is chosen? Based on International
Institute of Event Management, event manager is one of the Top 50 Career
choices in the world. This is because there is more jobs, professional growth
opportunity, opportunity to switch careers, global reach and better pays. As
prove, the income opportunities of event manager are amongst the best, relative
to many other professions. It is estimated that the median pay in the United
States for event planners is as high as $97,000 for candidates with the right
experience. By studying about event manager, it will help us on how to
communicate with people and to critical thinking. We also will do something
with full courage to satisfy people.
Whenever our
plan and management going well as what we have planned earlier, the
satisfaction will come. The satisfaction leads us to happiness. Isn’t happiness
is our fitrah (nature) as human being. Allah s.w.t said :
(Surat An-Najm
53:43)
“And that it is He who makes [one] laugh and
weep”[3]
What kind of
skills do event managers need? The best event managers can lend an informed eye
to every aspect of an event. Because of this, the job requires a mixture of
creative and practical skills, from the artistic direction and conceptualising
of audio-visual elements, to procurement, budgeting and dealing with clients.
And don’t forget that you’ll need a good knowledge of health and safety and
sustainability laws. It is a fascinating, intense and diverse role - but not
one for the faint hearted. You need to be flexible too. Generally, you’ll be
working ordinary hours, but in the run up to large events you’ll need to be
prepared for a lot of overtime (and your fair share of frustration). Don’t
worry though - it’ll all seem worth it on the day! Besides, these are what are needed
to be a good event manager. The first one is communication and telephone skills.
These are really important because the first impression leads to anything that
comes later. Second, handling complaints and liaising with guests. Stay calms
when the clients critic on our work. Explain to them nicely and convince them
that we are the best. The last one is strong organisational skills and good
attention to detail.
What are the
responsibilities of an event manager? The first one is site surveying. As
manager, they must always alert on what are currently happen and should prepare
any precaution if there is a problem. Second is client
service. We must take care of our client satisfaction. This is what Prophet
Muhammad s.a.w taught us in one hadith that mentioned,
”A friend of
Prophet Muhammad SAW named Huzaifa reported; one day, there were a group of
people from Najran came to see Muhammad. They said, “O Rasul Allah, send us one
guy that can be trusted.” So, Prophet said “Okay, I will send a guy that surely
can be trust. You can really count on him.” Huzaifah said everyone asked who
that man is. At last it has been proved that man is Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah.” [4](Narrated
by Imam Muslim).
From this
hadith, it showed that Prophet Muhammad prioritize his client and really
provide good service to his client. Next responsibility is brief clarification.
In anything services, the client should know what is going on so that there is
no misunderstanding. The event manager should take the responsibility on this
matter. The last one is budget drafting.
In order to make the budget enough, the manager should draft how many
the budget that should be expense.
What are
importances’s in event management in order to be a good event manager? There
are planning and timing. Planning is in their job description, so there are
many companies out there who achieve great results and have good reputations
simply because they have planned properly, delegated wisely, worked within the
deadline and successfully managed the workload in order to deliver a flawless
production. It is most definitely easier said than done, but it does work if
there is constant communication between the event planner and the client.[5]
Timing is the time budgeting in completing and preparing the task or the
event. To satisfy clients, the event
manager should make everything ready for the event. Time management is so
important. Allah said in Quran;
( Surah Al Asr
1-3)[6]
Meaning: “By
time. Indeed, mankind is in loss, Except for those who have believed and done
righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to
patience.”
What kinds of
event that can be manage? The best choice is to manage the walimah urus.
Walimatul urus is a banquet made if there is a Muslim marriage. The purpose is
to announce to the society that the couple is married. It can be held with
luxurious or economical, depend on someone ability. However the moderate one is
encouraged because in moderation there is rahmah. Prophet Muhammad SAW said:
“Give a wedding
banquet even if with one sheep.” (Bukhari)[7]
But, as an event
manager, they should manage the ceremony to not against the syara’. Prof Madya
Dr Asri Zainul Abidin has mentioned that the wedding ceremony in Malaysia
should not follow what Hinduism custom like angular.[8]
Nowadays, usually couple who are ready and plan to married take the package
with the event manager as complete package including dress. So, the event
manager should provide the dress that is cover the aurat and modestly. Allah
swt said;
(Surah Al Ahzab
verse 59)[9]
Meaning: “O
Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to
bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more
suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving
and Merciful.”
The foods that
have been served also must be halal and good for health. Event manager are responsible
if foods are not good. Allah said in
Quran:
(Al Baqarah
2:168)[10]
Meaning: “O
mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not
follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.”
Prophet
Muhammad saw also said in hadith narrated by Imam Bukhari where he told us to
eat the food that is halal and good. By this, we know that event manager should
taking care all of those particular things in his management.
How
we can get barakah from this job? First, all of our deeds started by
Bismillahirrahmanirrahim. Make our niat/purpose just because of Allah and seek
for his blessing /”mardhatillah”. Prophet Muhammad saw said, “All of deeds are
based on intention/niat.” [11]
From this, we would know that anything is based on our intention. By intention,
it will determine whether the job going smoothly or not. We can know whether we
are blessed or not if what we feel when are doing the job. Next, putting trust
in Allah. Allah said in Quran:
(Surah At-Talaq 65:3)[12]
Meaning: “And will provide for him from
where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient
for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for
everything a [decreed] extent.”
From
this verse, we know that by believing in Allah, He will help you. Next, honesty
in trade. As an event manager, we should honest in sell our services. This is
for all of the business people out there (include ebayers!). We shouldn’t
assume lying and deceiving people will make our trade profitable. On the
contrary, it will remove the blessing from your trade. Prophet Muhammad (peace
be upon him) said: “The buyer and the seller have the option of cancelling or
confirming the bargain unless they separate, and if they spoke the truth and
made clear the defects of the goods, then they would be blessed in their
bargain, and if they told lies and hid some facts, their bargain would be
deprived of Allah’s blessings”.[13]
Next is Dua. Ask Allah for barakah! If you take note of some of the Duas of the
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) you’ll notice that the Prophet used to
make dua for barakah. We always say: “May Allah bless you!” Well, guess what?
That’s a source of barakah! Also, when you’re invited to someone’s house,
Prophet Muhammad advised us to make the following dua for the host: “O Allah,
bless for them, that which You have provided them, forgive them and have mercy
upon them.” Fifth, halal income/money. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
said: “O people, Allah is good and He therefore, accepts only that which is
good” (Scholars say this refers to Halal income and the importance of it). A
scholar also said of the one who eats Haram, that his limbs will disobey Allah
whether he likes it or not, and that the one who eats Halal and seeks Halal
income, his limbs will also do good and will be given the permission to seek
goodness. This concept of your limbs being ‘blessed’ and enabled to do good is
truly a blessing and a barakah we should all seek. It reminds me of a story of
an old man who jumped a large distance that the young men were unable to jump.
When the young men asked the old man how he did it, he replied: “These are our
limbs: we protected them from committing sins when we were young, so Allah
preserved them for us when we got old”.
Last
but not least, paying zakah. All of those wealth that we have, we must share it
to asnaf(people who have the right to receive zakat.) Allah said in Quran:
(Surah Al Baqarah)
Meaning: “And
[recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon
them], "Do not worship except Allah ; and to parents do good and to
relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and
establish prayer and give zakah." Then you turned away, except a few of
you, and you were refusing.”[14]
As a conclusion, by being an event
manager, there are many things that should be taking care to make sure the
rezeki that we get is halal. It is good to make people satisfy. A word “thank
you” is enough to make us smile and hope for the blessing of Allah s.w.t.
